Benefits of Online Counseling

Some people feel more comfortable attending therapy from the comfort of their own home. While we offer psychotherapy in a private in-person setting, we know that online therapy–also known as teletherapy, is an effective alternative for those who aren’t able to come in to the office.

Sometimes it’s just not feasible to make it to a therapist’s office in person. Don’t let commutes, child care, or a non-flexible schedule get in the way of your therapy.

Online video counseling with Rock Creek Therapy is a great option for people who can’t meet in person with a therapist. We offer teletherapy appointments in the morning, during the day, and in the early evening.

Effectiveness of Online Therapy

We are often asked if online therapy works like in-person therapy. Online psychotherapy is conducted in very similar ways to in-person therapy–there are no changes to the treatment provided, but you are looking at someone on a screen instead of across the room from you in a chair.

Our team is very experienced conducting online therapy sessions and have set up their therapy spaces to be conducive to the audio and video needs of the format. Our aim is that our team is as approachable and welcoming as they would be sitting across from you.

It’s important to us to bridge the screen divide that comes with online therapy. We strive to focus on your voice, your body language, and your facial expressions. We also make every effort to ensure that we have reliable internet connections so that we avoid bad audio/video and/or disconncted sessions.

Privacy – HIPAA Compliant Teletherapy

Teletherapy, also called video counseling or telehealth therapy is the practice of providing psychotherapy and counseling services to people via a completely secure, confidential, HIPAA compliant platform. You and your therapist will be able to see and hear each other in real time.

If you have a smart phone or a computer with a camera, you can attend a private and HIPAA compliant teletherapy session.

Once you’re ready to move forward, we’d work together to set up an account and download Spruce. If you’d rather not download anything we can also use Doxy.me–a telemedicine video conferencing web portal.

What to Expect from an Online Therapy Session

If you’ve been to therapy before, sometimes it takes a session or two to get used to online therapy, but typically, we hear that the pros outweigh the cons! People end up missing less time from work, home, or family to visit their therapist and still feel the benefits of effective psychotherapy.

How are We Different from Talkspace, BetterHelp, or Cerebral?

  • We are not a mass market online therapy service.
  • We do not provide messaging or chat-based therapy service.
  • We are a women-owned and led practice.
  • We are a locally-owned, Washington, D.C. based practice.
  • There are no sign-up, subscription, or cancellation fees.
  • Our therapists are experienced, reliable, and licensed.
  • We do not pay actors or YouTubers to promote our services
  • You get to pick from our available therapists.
  • If you’re local, you may be able to see your therapist in person.

Finding a Private Space for your Session

Please find a quiet, private space for you to sit during your therapy appointment. We want you to be able to feel comfortable during your sessions, so it’s best to find a place where you won’t be interrupted by colleagues, family, or pets.

State Laws, Rules, and Regulation on Tele Mental Health

The rules and regulations around tele mental health vary from state-to-state. Please note that your therapist providing teletherapy is always a licensed mental health clinician with years of experience providing psychotherapy.

In order to conduct teletherapy, your therapist must be licensed where you are located. Currently, Rock Creek Therapy PLLC is able to offer teletherapy to people living in:

  • Washington, DC
  • Maryland
  • Illinois

If you are outside of these areas and are still interested in teletherapy, please still reach out. We may be able to connect you with someone who is licensed in your state.
