Online Psychotherapy Sessions – Requirements and Expectations

How Does Online Therapy Work?

Requirements for Teletherapy Sessions

There are a few key requirements for teletherapy sessions with one of our therapists. You will need a smartphone, tablet, or laptop, as well as a strong internet connection.

Your therapist will have some ideas for how to set-up an optimal internet connection. We would also want to make sure we schedule your teletherapy sessions at a time during which you will have a quiet, private space from which to engage in your session. Like in-person sessions, teletherapy sessions are generally much more productive when you feel confident that you won’t be overheard or interrupted.

These conditions are important since teletherapy involves meeting with your therapist over the internet. Like a video conference call, these sessions include both video and audio connection, so you and your therapist can see and hear each other in real time. Teletherapy is conducted in exactly the same manner as psychotherapy–although you’re seeing each other through your phone or computer screens, there are no changes to the treatment provided.

Who Might Prefer Online Therapy?

  • Prefer therapy from home
  • Have privacy concerns
  • Have mobility issues
  • Have time constraints
  • Live an an area with a lack of mental health providers
  • Are immunocompromised or have other health conditions

Online Therapy During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Many Rock Creek Therapy clinicians are available for online psychotherapy sessions. We are glad to offer teletherapy in order to better meet the needs of individuals with concerns about COVID-19.

We are also sensitive to the needs of the community during the current health crisis. COVID-19 has changed the way we live. It has also changed the way we conduct therapy.

As long as the internet connection provides a smooth connection, teletherapy is equally as effective as in-person therapy, and some even find certain benefits to this format.
